Flexible composite pipes (FCP) are simplified versions of metal-based flexible pipes due to simple configuration and lower functional requirements. Both mental-based and composite – based flexible pipes are further divided into two groups based on configuration: bonded or unboned.

The bonded nonmetallic FCP is named Thermoplastic Composite Pipes ( TCP) or Bonded Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipes(RTP). Banline provides entire continuous production machinery & solution of bonded fiberglass reinforced thermoplastic pipe (CFRTP) primary used in oil & gas industries. The larger diameter of CFRTP can be applicable in water field.

Structure of the RTP pipe

The bonded RTP pipe has three layers : Inner layer (HDPE or PERT), Reinforced layer (Fiberglass Tape prepreg with PE resin) , Outer layer (HDPE).

 

Bonded Fiberglass-RTP Uniqueness

- High-pressure resistance: The maximum pressure resistance of the CFRTP system is up to 60 MPa, more than 40 times of plastic pipes.

- High-temperature resistance: The maximum operating temperature of the system is 130℃, by using PERT-1 or PERT-2 for the inner layer, which is more than 60℃ higher than general plastic pipes.

- Long lifetime: 6 times of metal pipes, 2 times of plastic pipes.

- Corrosion resistance: Non-corrosive and environmental.

- Wall thickness: The wall thickness is 1/4 of plastic pipes, improving 30% flow rate.

- Lightweight: 40% lighter than plastic pipes, 30% lighter than steel wire reinforced composite pipe.

- Strong joints: Double-layer glass fiber superposition in joints, hot-melt socket, never leak.

- Low cost: 40% lower than plastic pipes.

The fiberglass tape width, thickness can be adjusted based on working pressure requirement.

Bonded Fiberglass RTP Pipe Joints

RTP is terminated or joined by metallic crimp-style fittings which are applied with portable equipment and do not require the application of heat or adhesives. The fittings can terminate the pipe with a standard lap-joint flange or with a weld neck transition that allows direct connection to steel using standard field welding procedures. Pipe-to-pipe couplings allow one length of RTP to be connected directly to another.

This joining system significantly reduces the time, effort, and cost of forming pipeline connections. Costly multiple-pass welding procedures and detailed inspections are eliminated, and far fewer joints are required for a given length of pipe. The overall result is faster, less costly installation with less environmental impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is general RTP pipe  and bonded RTP( known as TCP)?

Reinforced thermoplastic pipe (RTP) is referring to a reliable high strength synthetic fiber (such as glass, aramid or carbon) or high strength steel wire reinforced pipe system. The general RTP pipe is unbonded cause the holt-melt adhesive is made from Polyethylene (PE) matrix. The hot-melt adhesive is used to stick the inner lining and the outer jacket to the reinforced layer and it fully integrates with the HDPE when it is heated together. It is used in lower pressure and less demanding temperature applications compared to the fully bonded TCP (thermoplastic composite pipe).

The bonded RTP (Known as TCP) , bonded RTP pipes also consist of reinforced thermoplastic composites, quite similar as general RTP pipes, they are suited to higher pressures and a greater temperature range for following reasons. First, some bonded RTP(TCP) uses higher performing thermoplastic resins, such as PEEK, and/or carbon fiber. Second, Bonded RTP (TCP) layers are bonded to each other through melt-fusion, which yields higher performance properties than RTP made from the same materials.

What is the structure of the Bonded RTP pipe (TCP pipe)?

The reinforced thermoplastic pipe consists of 3 basic layers: an inner thermoplastic layer, a continuous fiber reinforcement wrapped around the pipe, and an outer thermoplastic layer. All three layers are melt-fused together in order to ensure a faultless bond. This results in a very strong, flexible light and corrosion resistant pipe.

The market application between general RTP and bonded RTP (TCP) ?

The general RTP cannot handle gas service under higher pressure without significant additional measures to be implemented for example:  gas venting etc. Bonded RTP (TCP) does not require this and can handle all services, including sweet, sour, crude, full wellstream and gas. RTP typically can be supplied in lengths of 300 meters per spool; TCP is manufactured in continuous lengths of at least 3,000 meters. The maximum supplied length per spool depends on allowable drum size, but even on standard road transportable drums TCP can be supplied in lengths of at least 600 meters.
